History and Values

In 2011, bootblacks were re-introduced to the Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend. 

We began seeking out bootblacks who bring a genuine love for leather, especially boots, and who are able to demonstrate meaningful experience in leather and boot care. They should combine technical knowledge, hospitality, and a welcoming presence with reliability, accountability, and respect for the community.

We especially value bootblacks who may not regularly have opportunities to practice their craft throughout the year. We also seek individuals who contribute a positive atmosphere, treat others with kindness, follow the MAL Code of Manners and Respect, represent themselves and their affiliations honestly, and help create a safe, respectful, and enjoyable experience for everyone. Since the return of the bootblacks, they have raised $37,213 half of which has gone to the Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather Travel fund, and the other half to a charity selected by that year’s bootblacks. 

Our only request is that a charity cannot be selected for two consecutive years.
